We are providing the services for recovering uranium from fresh fuels (non-irradiated fuels) stored in nuclear power plants that are under decommissioning for the reuse of such material. We are also providing technical support for the safe decommissioning of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station by leveraging our strengths as a fuel manufacturer.
As spent nuclear fuel, called used nuclear fuel that has been irradiarted in a nuclear reactor, is highly radioactive and strongly generates decay heat, they cannot be subject to direct disposal but require appropriate management. Building on our expertise as a fuel manufacturer, we are working on the development of technologies for storing such fuels safely for a long time.
In the process of nuclear fuel manufacturing, some types of waste attaching or containing uranium material (uranium waste) are generated. As a fuel manufacturer, we believe that it is our social responsibility to dispose of the uranium waste steadily and not to leave the burden to future generations. We are working on the development of the technology concerning uranium waste preprocessing and the methods in conformity with the Clearance Rule*.
*The Clearance Rule has been established to allow the reuse and disposal of radioactive waste generated from the operation or decommissioning of nuclear facilities, which contains an extremely low level of radioactive concdntrations and thus gives quite smaller impact on the human health, as general waste after obtaining regulatory approval.
